On Wednesday, October 16th forty students from Bethpage High School visited the Northport Power Plant to participate in their program titled “Careers in Energy.” The Northport Power Plant is one of the largest on the East Coast and produces 20% of Long Island’s electricity. Students were given an overview of the plant’s operations by the plant manager. The overview explained how oil and natural gas are funneled to the plant and how electric is generated for distribution. A guided tour of the plant also took place where students were able to see the boiler, turbines and control room. Students then were able to meet plant engineers who discussed their educational backgrounds and their specific job descriptions.
