A Nobel Visit for Students

Members of the Bethpage High School Student Civic Association met for the second time with three-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee Kathy Kelly to discuss her most recent endeavors. She spoke with students regarding her trek across part of the country and about priorities in government spending. She recently returned from her 13th trip to Afghanistan and shared the progress that people are making in their community school, sewing projects for women and other initiatives begun by groups that espouse non-violence.

Civic members also had the pleasure of hearing a spoken word poet from New York City who recited two original pieces and participated in the event. BHS Student Civic members in attendance included Firas Akbik, Josett Bernberg, Marie Giacinto, Deena Hadhoud, Lucas Lee and Madeleine Santoro. The event was part of the club’s participation in the Global Day of Listening, which now encompasses more than 30 countries on the 21st day of every month.
