Bethpage Wins First Place in Long Island Ethics Bowl!

The 2nd annual Long Island High School Ethics Bowl took place at Bethpage High School on Saturday, February 12th. Fourteen teams from eight area schools matched wits over ethical cases whose topics included sexting, polygamy, omitting information on a job application, sterilization of the mentally challenged, and the rights of obese airline passengers. All of the Bethpage teams made it to the semi-final round, but it was Bethpage Team A consisting Michelle Durnack, Mark Han, Matt Lippertshauser, Amy Gaines, and Alex Mangano that made it to the final round against Moorestown Friends Academy from New Jersey. After an hour of intense commentary and rebuttal Bethpage ultimately prevailed and took home the trophy! Congratulations!

The Long Island Ethics Bowl is sponsored by the Squire Family Foundation. The foundation was founded by Long Island native Gary Squire, an advocate for more philosophical instruction at the pre-college level. An Ethics Bowl is a collaborative yet competitive event, in which two teams are presented with a series of wide-ranging ethical dilemmas and are asked to analyze them; they are then judged on the basis of their analyses.
