Kramer Lane Students Learn How to Make Cider

Second-grade students at Kramer Lane Elementary School in the Bethpage Union Free School District were treated to a visit from BOCES Outdoor and Environmental Education naturalists to demonstrate how apple cider is made.

The naturalists taught the students about the different types of apples, counted and compared the number of seeds in different species of apples, taught the students what plants need in order to grow, and compared the color of apple cider, apple juice, and apple cider vinegar.

The students learned a song entitled “Grind, Grind, Grind the Apple” as they each took a turn grinding apples into cider.

The lesson on cider making concluded with a cider tasting and toast “to the fall apple harvest.”
