Turning Young Minds on to Math

Fourth and fifth-grade students at Central Boulevard Elementary School (CBS) in the Bethpage Union Free School District have embarked on a 21st Century Scholars activity by getting together after school to learn how to play “Equate.”

Equate is a math version of the game Scrabble. The players use tiles to form vertical or horizontal math equations, a process that requires computing and thinking strategically, critically, and creatively.

The CBS students were recently introduced to this activity incorporating addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Later in the school year, fractions will be added into the game.

The purpose of the activity is to hone students’ math skills and enhance the concept of turn-taking while providing entertainment.
