Volunteers Needed for Special Olympics

Bethpage School District will be hosting the Long Island Special Olympics on Saturday May 20, 2017 in conjunction with the Town of Oyster Bay.  “We are honored to be hosting over 600 special athletes that day who will compete in Track and Field, Swimming, Tennis and Weight Lifting.  We think it is going to be a great event for the athletes and for the Bethpage community,” said Terrence Clark, Superintendent of the Bethpage School District.

The Town of Oyster Bay is co-hosting the event which is expected to bring about 2,000 people to Bethpage High School and the Bethpage Community Park.  The Long Island Special Olympics Committee visited both sites and were very impressed with the facilities.  In many ways it is the perfect venue for such an important event.

“Special Olympics is an opportunity to showcase the talents and achievements of the participants, while also breaking down the social barriers and stereotypes,” said Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto. “We are very proud to be a partner with the Bethpage School District in making this important event a reality here in the Town of Oyster Bay. It would be difficult to find a more inspirational and positive event to rally the community behind.”

“We have partnered with the Town of Oyster Bay on a number of other big spectator events and each time it has been a terrific success.  They are always there to support projects that highlight the accomplishments of residents,” said Mr. Clark.

This is a big undertaking that will require a community effort.  Volunteers are needed to greet athletes, make sure they are fed, help them find their way around campus, walk them in for the Opening Ceremony and assist in the running of competitive events.  If you are interested in volunteering, please go to the district website (www.bethpagecommunity.com) to fill out a very short volunteer form.
