Beach Clean-Up 2017

Last Saturday Mr. Portuese with the help of Ms. Gatanas supervised the Marine Science Club as they participated in the Town of Oyster Bay Beach Clean-Up.  Our students worked hard to rid a mile stretch of Center Island of plastic bottles, soda cans and other miscellaneous trash.  One of the more interesting finds was a 1950’s vintage upper half of a boat engine.  We theorize that it was from a boat that sank years ago and was washed ashore by Superstorm Sandy’s surge.  It was covered by sand as the waters retreated.  Wind erosion over the years exposed the motor enough to be seen.  Our students dug the rest of it up so that it could be removed.  The weather wasn’t the greatest but the BBQ was!  Samples of local marine life were collected for our classroom tank.
