On Saturday March 31st Mr. Carroll and Mr. Portuese conducted a 21st Century trip to the Fire Island Lighthouse(built in 1858). Although the weather was a bit on the damp side, the experience was inspirational. Participants had the opportunity to climb the 190 steps to the top via the original spiral staircase. The students were also given a historical demonstration on how passengers were rescued from stranded ships. Another highlight was the newly build structure housing the old Fresnel lens that created the light beacon prior to electric lights. This new addition contained informative displays and interactive exhibits. The staff at the lighthouse were very friendly and knowledgeable making our experience truly memorable.
