It’s a Bird!

Second-grade students at Charles Campagne Elementary School in the Bethpage Union Free School District received a lesson on different types of birds and their habitats when they were visited by instructor Donna Waldenburg of the Long Island Center for Arts and Sciences.

After presenting a slideshow to the second graders, Mrs. Waldenburg discussed various species of birds, their instincts, what they eat, and how and why they migrate. She also led students through a hands-on activity in which they made birdfeeders from a pinecone, a piece of yarn, vegetable shortening, and birdseed.

The students were eager to bring home their birdfeeders to hang them in their own trees.
