Bethpage High School Robotics, Regal Eagles Team #2869 participated at the FIRST World Championships in Detroit, Michigan from April 26, 2018 through April 28, 2018.  The students earned the right to participate in the FIRST World Championships by earning the Engineering Inspiration Award at the School Business Partnerships of Long Island (SBPLI) regional earlier in the month with NASA generously funding their registration costs.

After their qualification matches, the Regal Eagles were members of top-seeded alliance in the Tesla Sub-Division Playoffs and joined forces with OP Robotics (Stoney Creek, Ontario) and Theory 6 Robotics (Mississauga, Ontario).  Their alliance rolled through the best-of-three formatted quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals in their division to a 6-1 record and won the Tesla Sub-Division!  From there, the Regal Eagles and their alliance partners played in the Einstein round-robin style tournament against the other five sub-division winners.  After the round-robin tournament, the Regal Eagles and their alliance partners finished 3rd (among 405 participating teams from around the globe)This marked the first time since 2002 that any Long Island robotics team has participated into the Einstein round-robin tournament at FIRST World Championships (East Islip).

While in the Motor City, Regal Eagles participated in a tour of the Ford Rouge Factory, where the students learned about the history of Ford Motor Company, watched an actual assembly line in progress, and learned about the innovative features in the Ford F-150.  For their team-building exercise, the Regal Eagles split up into two teams to tackle the challenges of an Escape Room. In a thrilling finish, both teams were successful and managed to 'escape the room' in under the allotted 60 minutes!

Congratulations to the Regal Eagles on this remarkable accomplishment!  Special thanks to mentors/coaches Mr. Zabell and Mr. Kay, the parents/guardians for their unwavering support, Ms. Popkin for assisting with planning every detail of the travel itinerary, and Mr. Clark for traveling to meet the team in Detroit to support them throughout the event!
