High School freshmen Lauren Hawley and Shane Nikas were celebrated as winners of the Voice of Democracy Essay Contest, presented through the Plainview Veterans of Foreign Wars, during a ceremony on Feb. 28.

According to the VFW website, the Voice of Democracy has been the VFW’s premier scholarship program since 1947. Students compete by writing and recording an audio essay on an annual patriotic theme. This year’s theme is “Why My Vote Matters.” The contest is open to all high school students.

Lauren was honored as the first-place winner from the high school while also taking second place in the county. Meanwhile, high school second-place honors went to Shane for his essay. Contestants were judged on both content in the written essay and delivery heard through the audio.
“Congratulations to Lauren and Shane for their hard work, dedication and perseverance,” said teacher Jacquelyn Keane.
