Seniors Stacy Kappel and Soham Maiti have been honored as finalists in the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. The pair have advanced in the competition after being named semifinalists in September.

Stacy and Soham have been counted among the nation’s 15,000 finalists. They had to submit a detailed scholarship application that included their academic records and list of extracurricular activities, community service, leadership roles, employment and past honors. Additionally, their SAT scores had to be equivalent to or better than their PSAT scores while also maintaining prestigious academic performance. A recommendation from a high school official was also written on their behalf.

Stacy aspires to major in engineering when she begins college in the fall. The senior recently applied to local universities and is excited to decide on a college in the near future. At Bethpage, she is a member of the National Honor Society and Italian Honor Society. Outside of school, she has been a dancer for 14 years.

The president of the Philosophy Club and the team captain of the Ethics Club, Soham is also an All-State musician. He was also one of the founding members of the school’s Chamber Orchestra while also being part of the Mathletes and National and Spanish Honor Societies. He intends on majoring in economics in college.

“Congratulations to Stacy and Soham on becoming finalists in such a prestigious program,” said Principal Nicholas Jantz. “The entire district wishes them the best of luck as they advance!”
