Staying Afloat At Central Boulevard

Third grade students from Central Boulevard Elementary School in the Bethpage School District conducted an experiment on buoyancy in the school’s STEM lab on Nov. 26.

As part of the lesson, students were challenged to create a boat at home to test in the lab. Surface area, volume and mass all had to be considered when designing and building their creations. Several experiments were conducted to test the buoyancy and strength of the homemade boats.

Students used pennies to add weight and excitedly waited for their boats to either stay afloat or sink. The interactive activity allowed students to create, learn and use experimental strategies to come to a conclusion.
