The C.S.E.

The Committee on Special Education (C.S.E.) and its preschool counterpart, the Committee on Preschool Special Education (C.P.S.E.) are multidisciplinary teams that are appointed by the Board of Education pursuant to New York State Law and Regulations.

The major functions of these committees include:

·        Identifying, evaluating and recommending placement for pupils with disabilities.

·        Assuring that appropriate due process safeguards are provided for each student.

·        Maintaining an annually revised register of all disabled children who reside in the district and who are eligible to attend preschool or public school during the school year.

·        Establishes a network for communication and sharing of resources with other educational and community service agencies.

·        And reporting to the Board of Education on the adequacy and status of programs, services and facilities made available to the disabled school-aged pupils by the school district and, for disabled preschool children, by public and private agencies with the County of Nassau.

The Bethpage C.S.E. / C.P.S.E. consists of Board of Education appointed members from various disciplines involved in the education of children.  When the C.S.E. / C.P.S.E. meets to perform its mandated functions the membership will include:

·        The Chairperson

·        A school psychologist

·        A general education teacher

·        A special education teacher

·        A social worker

·        A parent member

·        The child’s teacher

·        The parent of the child and the child (if appropriate) are encouraged to be active participants in the C.S.E. / C.P.S.E.

·        Other individuals who may have knowledge of or special expertise regarding the child

·        C.P.S.E. only – a county representative.

It is the goal of the C.S.E. / C.P.S.E. to recommend the provision of an appropriate educational program for each disabled student, in the least restrictive environment.  We work with the parent and the school to develop an appropriate educational environment for each disabled student in the district.
