Bethpage High School Students Go Around the World…
Without Leaving their Classroom

Bethpage High School Mathematics teacher Ms. Kristen Garvey led students “Around the World in 60 Minutes” as part of the 21st Century Learning initiative. Ms. Garvey frequently travels abroad for pleasure, and was pleased to share her experiences through a presentation and photo slideshow.

The group took a virtual tour of many cities, islands, countries, and continents, touching on everything from major cities to rainforests, from animals to ocean life. Ms. Garvey has been to five continents thus far and has seen many interesting habitats and formations including volcanoes, jungles, and hot springs, along with various species such as iguanas, sharks, woodpeckers, anteaters, flamingoes, and penguins. She has explored sites and scenes via whale watching, camping, ziplining, snorkeling, and much more.

Ms. Garvey discussed Canada first, showing pictures from Montreal, Quebec, and Nova Scotia. Next was South America, for which she displayed visuals from Costa Rica, Lake Titicaca, Cusco, and the Galapagos Islands. The students then learned about Europe, Australia, Tahiti, and Alaska.

Throughout the event, students had the opportunity to ask questions and share their own thoughts about the areas covered and places they would like to visit. It was an informative afternoon, covering a large distance in a short amount of time.
