21st Century: TOBAY Dunes
JFK's Earthbound Club and 21st Century Learners teamed up to attend the Town of Oyster Bay's annual Dune Restoration Project at TOBAY Beach. Students were given hand shovels and bundles of sea grass to plant in the dunes. When the roots grow, the grass holds the sand in place, preventing erosion of the dunes. The dunes play a vital role in protecting the South Shore towns of Long Island from erosion and provide a habitat for many shore birds, plants and other organisms. The students received T-shirts and and free donuts, clam chowder and hot chocolate! The weather was beautiful, sunny and 50 degrees. An unexpected visitor even swam by....a seal! The students enjoyed being part of this community service event.
