Calligraphy Workshop
BHS students had the chance to learn about the art of Chinese calligraphy on a 21st Century trip to the China Institute in Manhattan. The tour began with a 15 minute video on the art and history of calligraphy followed by a gallery exhibit called “Humanism in China: A Contemporary Record of Photography.” This exhibit displays the first large scale collection of documentary photography acquired by any museum from the People’s Republic of China and offered a visual commentary on life in China between the years 1951 to 2003. Next, the students participated in a workshop where they learned Chinese characters and how to use the proper brushstrokes to create their calligraphy. After their visit to the China Institute the students enjoyed a huge buffet dinner featuring a variety of Chinese foods.
