Bethpage High School Students on a Hunt to Help a Good Cause
Bethpage High School students and staff recently joined together for a common cause during a scavenger hunt to benefit National Lymphedema Networks. Lymphedema is a medical condition that causes swelling in the arms or legs due to missing or damaged lymph nodes or lymphatic vessels, and students succeeded in raising close to $700 for treatment and research.
Junior Jordan Schessler, who has lived with Lymphedema since elementary school, coordinated this event along with student Melissa Rohr, School Social Worker Ms. Christine Kennedy, and others. “We do so much fundraising at the High School, and I wanted to give back,” Jordan expressed. “This is a good way to raise awareness with the hopes of finding a cure.” She also explained that the idea for a scavenger hunt was developed as something fun and different that is also in conjunction with the 21st Century Learning initiative.
Students worked in groups, with a total of 105 participants, and gathered clues all around the school building. The scavenger hunt was both education and health-related, incorporating school subject areas, searches for healthy recipes in the library, sit-ups in the gym, and other activities. Winners were awarded Dunkin Donuts gift certificates and all participants earned 21st Century Scholar credit.
