Touring the Titanic!
Students immersed themselves in a United Kingdom cultural experience which centered on the Titanic Exhibition in Manhattan. Since the ship was built in Ireland and was owned by the British White Star Line it was only fitting to start with an authentic pub dinner at O’Brien’s Restaurant. The students sampled authentic U.K. fare such as Shepard’s Pie, Irish Beef Stew, Bangers (Irish sausage) and Mash, and Fish and Chips. As students entered the exhibit they were each given a boarding pass with the background story of one of the passengers who sailed on the Titanic. Over the course of the tour the students could see what type of accommodations and level of service a person of their social class would have had. And, at the end of the exhibit, they could find out whether their passenger survived or perished on that fateful night. The exhibit focused on how the ‘unsinkable’ ship met its fate and the haunting personal artifacts recovered from the wreck including the largest collection of Titanic artifacts, many on display for the first time after being recovered from the ocean floor including jewels, china, documents, clothing and much more.
