Bethpage High School recently held informational workshops focusing on the college application and selection process. High School juniors and their parents were invited to attend these sessions, as well as a general meeting entitled, “The College Essay – Why Does the Essay Cause the Most Stress During the College Application Process?”
The workshops focused on the various steps juniors must take in considering and applying to colleges. Guidance counselors led discussions on what makes up an applicant’s folder, and SUNY Stony Brook Associate Dean of Admissions Mr. Robert Pertusati and former Bethpage High School English teacher and academic coach/college consultant Ms. JoAnn DiFranco facilitated the general session that addressed essays. Three seniors participated in the essay lecture as well, and shared their own experiences.
Melissa Louis, Nicole Ross, and Kevin Bickard were each credited by their guidance counselors for writing exceptional college essays. As they prepare to make their college decisions and move on to the next steps in their lives, the three students were happy to offer words of advice to their younger peers. Melissa focused on time management, emphasizing that “time is of the essence” and explaining why these essays should not be procrastinated. She has been accepted to State University at Stony Brook, New York University, Fordham University, Hofstra University, Long Island University at CW Post, and Malloy College.
Nicole and Kevin touched on how to write an essay and choose a topic, offering some pointers on what colleges look for. “College essays should show personality, be unique, or stand out,” stated Nicole. “It’s important to express yourself through your essay since they aren’t meeting you in person.” Nicole has been accepted to Hofstra University’s honor program, Marist College, Quinnipiac University, Fairfield University, and Fordham University, and Kevin has applied to Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Tufts University, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Another presentation, “Getting From Where You Are to Where You Want to Be,” is being held at Bethpage High School on Monday, March 2, at 7:00 p.m. Author, motivational speaker, and former Dean of Admissions Mr. Peter Van Buskirk will be offering an interactive and informational session on the college admission process to 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students as well as their parents.
