Bethpage and John F. Kennedy Middle School Host Senator Clinton and Power to Learn
On October 17, 2006, Senator Hillary Clinton visited the John F. Kennedy Middle School to discuss Internet and Gaming Safety with parents and students. Senator Clinton was greeted by school Principal Kerri McCarthy, the JFK Band as well as a huge welcoming banner created by the school's Art Club. She told the students that she has visited many schools, but that this was the best reception she ever received!
Senator Clinton was then welcomed by Dr. Richard S. Marsh to the assembled audience of PTA members from across Long Island. The parents had already begun the conversation with Trent Anderson of Power to Learn. The Senator discussed the issues relating to Internet Safety and how the world has changed with the increased use of the Internet. She pointed out the positive uses of the Internet, but stressed how parents had growing concerns about the dangers students could face while surfing or gaming on the Internet. Her staff handed out a manual prepared by her office about how we can all become media savvy and how parents need to be involved in the resource. Senator Clinton noted how Cablevision's Power to Learn website offers an excellent resource called Internet Smarts for students. After taking questions from several parents, the Senator met with 20 Bethpage students (middle and high school) who recounted their own experiences on the Internet. She asked them questions about how they used the Internet and media and what advice they could offer to younger children to avoid dangerous practices. The event was moderated by Terry Clark, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and Technology.
The Senator left much time for autographs and photographs with the students and parents. It was an exciting day for Bethpage!
