21st Century Japan Mini-Course
The 21st Century Japan mini-course was a smashing success. Students met over the course of 5 workshops to discuss the geography of Japan, create Japanese flags, discuss Japanese folktales and literature, and discover interesting facts about Japan’s economy, government, customs, and belief systems through Internet research. The highlights of this mini-course were the International Celebration Day in which the students presented their research and shared what they had learned throughout the course, and the field trip to Shiro of Japan. Students were given tours of traditional Tatami rooms and enjoyed a sushi making demonstration. Several students were lucky enough to experience sushi making first hand with the help of a professional sushi chef. Finally, and perhaps most importantly (at least to the students), all in attendance were treated to a fun and exciting Teppanyaki cooking demonstration and enjoyed hibachi style shrimp, chicken, steak, noodles, and vegetables. A special thanks to the staff of Shiro of Japan for making our field trip a truly wonderful experience. We would also like to thank the students; without your interest this mini-course would not have been possible.
