Technology Education in JFK Middle School

Students at the JFK Middle School are experiencing something totally different in their technology classes these days. According to Pete Michels, Technology teacher at JFK, "Scantek has finally arrived, and it is all we expected it to be. The students are reading, writing, exploring, constructing, learning, and having fun. It doesn't get any better than this." Opening just a few weeks ago, the new Scantek Technology Lab is a computer-based instructional system that introduces students to a variety of technologies used in the workplace. The new lab allows students to rotate through a series of modules over the course of 7th and 8th grades.

Among the topics students are learning about in the Scantek Lab are alternative energy, flight simulation, aerodynamics, computer-operated mills, electrical circuitry, robotics and automation, hydraulics, industrial control, laser and fiber optics. Each student works with a partner to complete a series of experiments in each field. Students rotate each week and are often back in the traditional shop doing woodwork, designing bridges, or making rockets. "It is a fun and challenging learning experience, and it helps us to understand the word 'Technology," according to students Allison Waters and Stephanie Katsoros.
The new lab has been an instant success. Ms. Janet Schwamb, JFK Middle School Principal, is very pleased. "Scantek is a wonderful computer modular program that affords students the opportunity to work with engaging technological activities. Any visitor to the Scantek lab will see students enthusiastically participating in the varied computer activities that are offered. Scantek is a wonderful addition to our Technology program.
The Scantek Lab is yet another example of how the district Bond Issue is enhancing the technology opportunities for Bethpage students. This year saw the implementation of classroom computers in the K-5 schools, the installation of the new Computer Music Lab at the High School and the home access piece extended to all K-12 students.
