Kramer Fifth Graders as Environmentalists
Representatives of the three Kramer Lane Fifth Grade classes under the supervision of Ms. Cano researched the environmental and economic impact of using polystyrene food trays in the school cafeteria. After exhaustive study and statistical analysis, the students concluded that switching over to recycled paper products would be far better for the environment. Dr. Cicione was very impressed with the thoroughness of their work. The students presented their findings to Mr. Joseph Marchesiello, Assistant Superintendent for Business, Ms. Maria Karambatsakis, Purchasing Department, and Mr. Terrence Clark, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and Technology. The students answered questions on their findings and were able to create a very persuasive argument for the switch. Central Administration will now be looking at the options presented. The students concluded that during their five years of buying lunch at Kramer Lane they had used over 109,000 polystyrene trays and those trays would last in our landfills for hundreds of years.
