The
'Magnet'-ude of Science
Second graders in Kramer Lane Elementary School in Bethpage were drawn
in by the magnetism & wonder of science when guest educator Mrs. Yoblon
conducted a workshop on magnets. The workshop was an interactive PTA sponsored
program that focused on the students' current science curriculum.
The Long Island Arts & Science's Magnet Workshop helped students to
discover the power of magnets. Students were first presented with a lecture
on the scientific principles of magnetism, accompanied by a slide show
with images demonstrating its force in nature. Mrs. Yoblon then discussed
and demonstrated the various types of magnets and how they play a role
in our daily lives. Next, students worked in teams to conduct a simple
experiment and learn what common everyday items hold magnetic qualities.
To finish up the workshop, each student created a fun and practical craft
combining a few ordinary materials and their new knowledge of magnets.
