Bethpage Read to Achieve Program 2007-08

Bethpage Schools, in conjunction with the New York Knicks, Cablevision and Power to Learn, kicked off a new reading program called Read to Achieve. Third graders from all three elementary schools came up to Bethpage High School for a day of fun and to meet their new reading mentors- the BHS Captains Club. Students learned how important reading is to a good education. High School students talked about their favorite books and their love of reading. Troy Bowers of the Knicks discussed his own love for learning and how important good teachers are for students. And then it was basketball time. High School students ran the third graders through some basketball drills both inside the gym and outside where the NBA Groove Truck was parked.

It was a great day and the teachers left with a gift- extra sports books for their classrooms- and the students left with pencils and backpacks that say Bethpage Schools Read to Achieve. The High School students are known as scholar-athletes because they are both excellent athletes and excellent students. They will now visit the third grade classrooms to make sure that everyone is keeping up with their reading!

Thanks to all the students, the teachers, the administrators, Troy Bowers, the New York Knicks,
Cablevision and Power to Learn!
