Bethpage Relay for Life
The Bethpage community came out in full force to support Relay for Life and to do our part to fight cancer. It was a tremendous turnout for a great cause. The ceremony was at times moving, somber, reflective and celebratory. Congratulations to Judy Wichter and Leslie Scuderi for planning an evening that went beyond everyone's expectations. They had a great Planning Committee that attended to every detail! Kevin Wichter and Gary Bretton did great jobs as host. BHS teacher Ida Barry was instrumental in the logistics. Thanks to all the students in Students Putting an End to Cancer, a club founded several years ago by then BHS student Brad Jerson. Brad gave a terrific talk about his motivation in founding the club. Cancer survivors had moving stories to tell of their battles and were honored for their heroics. Kevin Healy, Assistant Principal of Bethpage High School, played the bagpipes to initiate the lighting of the luminarias. At last count the event raised over $130,000. Special thanks to Supervisor John Venditto and Legilsator Ed Mangano for attending and lending their voice on this. Everyone in Bethpage should be proud of this community and its big heart!
