Students in Allison Robb’s third and fourth grade classes from Central Boulevard Elementary School have been participating in virtual STEM challenges as a part of a remote Nassau BOCES summer program.
Before each hour-long session, students are given guidelines on what materials are needed to complete the day’s challenge. Then, Ms. Robb provides information about a related science concept via videos and a Google Slides presentation. The students are then presented with the challenge, which they build on screen.
After completing each challenge, the students share what they’ve made, test their devices and are encouraged to share their final projects via the online platform Flipgrid. Some projects the class has worked on so far include solar ovens, marble runs and paper helicopters. The challenges encourage students to be creative and resourceful, while trying to accomplish the task presented.
