Children reading together.

As part of Bethpage’s 21st Century Scholars’ program, fifth graders at Central Boulevard School recently hosted an after-school literacy event to foster a love of reading among younger students.

The fifth graders formed groups of 2-3, with each team choosing a picture book to focus on during the event. They created a short lesson plan for the book that included reading it aloud, an activity related to its theme and prepared questions and discussion points. Second grade students were invited to join one of the fifth grade teams to explore the team's chosen book.

The fifth-grade teams prepared thoroughly by designing distinct activities for the second graders that expanded on the books' themes. Students who read Eric Carle’s “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” made their own caterpillars from beads and pipe cleaners. The group that read “Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type” decorated bookmarks with illustrations from the story. Students reading “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” drew pictures, while the group reading “The Day the Crayons Quit” took turns acting out the story. These activities encouraged the younger students to engage with the stories more actively, focusing on details and plot points. This approach offered a more interactive learning experience compared to just reading the books.

The fifth graders impressed with their preparation for the event and their leadership skills, as they directed the activities and engaged the younger students with thoughtful questions, prompting discussions around each chosen book.

Bethpage’s 21st Century Scholars’ program is designed to help students reach their highest potential. Students maintain a portfolio of tasks that demonstrate their learning both in and out of school. The program aims to help students follow their passions and explore new activities and topics, helping them become more well-rounded scholars. The program is available to students in grade 4 through high school.

The literacy event provided a great opportunity for fifth and second grade students. The fifth graders focused on developing leadership skills, brainstorming ideas, and teaching a topic. Meanwhile, the second graders experienced the 21st Century Scholars’ program in action, engaged with older peers, and enjoyed a fun way to explore and understand themes from books.
