First Graders Predict Groundhog Day: Math Meets Meteorology

On Friday, first grade students in Ms. Monoyos's and Ms. Asimakopoulos’s class at CBS cast their votes on whether Punxsutawney Phil would see his shadow on Groundhog Day. After learning about the lore and tradition behind this quirky February holiday, the class took a poll: would Phil spot his shadow, signaling six more weeks of winter?

Despite the mountains of snow piled in the parking lot, optimism reigned in the classroom. Only five students predicted Phil would see his shadow, while eleven hopeful classmates voted for no shadow and an early spring.

Students transformed their predictions into colorful bar graphs, practicing their data visualization skills, then settled in to watch the charming story Groundhog's Day Off—a perfect blend of math and literacy learning wrapped in seasonal fun.

So what was Phil's final call this morning? Unfortunately for the optimists, those five students who predicted a shadow were correct: six more weeks of winter lie ahead. Don't pack away those hats and gloves just yet!
