What better way to celebrate Pi Day than with a face full of whipped cream?
On Friday, Mar. 13, students at CCS took part in a spirited Pi Day celebration that turned a beloved mathematical constant into a memorable – and messy – school event. The festivities, made possible through a collaboration between students, teachers and the PTA, raised $2,918 for PTA programs while getting the whole school excited about math.
In the days leading up to the event, teachers placed donation jars in their classrooms, giving students the chance to vote with their dollars for which teachers they most wanted to pie. The five teachers who collected the most donations earned the honor – or perhaps the hazard – of taking a pie to the face. A student from each winning teacher's class was then selected at random to deliver the throw.
This year's most popular teachers were Ms. Easteadt, Mr. Pepe, Ms. Parker, Ms. Paraskakis, and Ms. Lukasik. But the biggest sport of the day may have been Principal Julianne Inghilterra, who didn't just play along – she invited three students to pie her at once, making for a true triple whammy.
The celebration also had a brainy component: three students were recognized for memorizing the most digits of pi. Sam Reiser, Swarit Parikh and Veronica Shapiro all impressed their peers, but it was Swarit who took top honors – reciting an extraordinary 311 digits from memory.
All told, it was a day that proved math can be just as fun as it is challenging – especially when a teacher is on the receiving end of a pie.
