On May 19, Bethpage High School welcomed dozens of new inductees into four prestigious honor societies: the National Mathematics Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta; the National English Honor Society; the National Social Studies Honor Society, Rho Kappa; and the National Business Honor Society.
The ceremony was held in the Bethpage High School auditorium and drew a well-attended crowd of friends, family, teachers, and administrators. Assistant Principal Charlotte Hirsch-Beckmann hosted the event alongside John Titolo, Director of Mathematics; Valerie Filbry, Director of Literacy and Language Arts; and Erica Indenbaum, Coordinator of Social Studies.
The president of each Bethpage chapter of their respective honor society approached the podium and spoke about the importance of their field of study, both in their education and in everyday life.
Rho Kappa chapter president Leanna Appice reminded her peers that history is not just something you read about but something we create and participate in every day.
Daniel Fusolo, co-president of Mu Alpha Theta, described math as a reflection of life itself: it teaches problem-solving, tenacity, and a strong work ethic – all qualities valuable not only in the classroom but beyond it. He praised the inductees, saying, This is not just a celebration of what we have already accomplished, but a recognition of our potential.
Elizabeth Thomas represented the National English Honor Society. She spoke about how English language arts have allowed her to express herself creatively and foster her own unique voice.
Lukas Moerler of the National Business Honor Society was the final chapter president to share his thoughts. He spoke about how his business classes have prepared him for the future, from developing leadership and entrepreneurial skills to learning to collaborate effectively as part of a team. He closed with an inspirational message for his peers: Carpe diem. Seize the day.
After the speeches, each chapter president lit a candle representing their honor society. Ms. Hirsch-Beckmann, Ms. Indenbaum, and Ms. Filbry then presented membership certificates to the inductees, while Mr. Titolo led the newest members in their oath of commitment.
The district congratulates all new members of Mu Alpha Theta, the National English Honor Society, and Rho Kappa, as well as the National Business Honor Society.
