On May 20, six members of Bethpage High School’s award-winning robotics team, the Regal Eagles, visited Kramer Lane Elementary School to lead a series of engineering workshops for fifth grade students. The workshops, designed to introduce the younger students to the STEM opportunities available to them in middle and high school, will continue with upcoming sessions at Charles Campagne and Central Boulevard.
The high schoolers began each session by giving an overview of various engineering disciplines, piquing the fifth graders’ curiosity about the many career paths available in the field. The highlight of the visit was a hands-on activity in which students worked alongside the Regal Eagles on several challenges using Snap Circuits, STEM kits that introduce kids to the concepts of electrical engineering. Working alongside their high school mentors, the fifth graders experienced the excitement of learning the basics of circuitry.
Each workshop concluded with a conversation about the many STEM opportunities awaiting students in middle and high school, including participation on the JFK Middle School robotics team and the esteemed Regal Eagles program at Bethpage High School.
This outreach effort offered high school students a unique opportunity to share their passion for robotics while mentoring the next generation of engineers. By encouraging younger students to explore STEM early on, the Regal Eagles are helping to build a strong foundation for innovation and teamwork in Bethpage’s schools.
