Bethpage Schools take part in community parade marking nation's 250th anniversary

On July 3, the Bethpage Schools community joined a special parade to commemorate the 250th anniversary of our country's founding, marking a once-in-a-lifetime celebration. The parade culminated in downtown Bethpage and featured members of the local fire and police departments, the Bethpage Water District, two pipe bands, several local organizations and politicians, and a World War II veteran.

The parade began at Bethpage High School, proceeded down Broadway, and ended outside BK Sweeneys. A bandshell was set up outside the Campagne House, where the JFK chorus performed throughout the parade. Marching in the parade were the Bethpage High School Band, the JFK Band, the Board of Education and several administrators. Superintendent Dave Schneider served as master of ceremonies.

Despite the sweltering heat, Broadway was lined with local residents, all decked out in red, white, and blue, many waving flags as the parade passed by. Following the parade, Mr. Scheider introduced 105-year-old World War II veteran Dominick Critelli, who addressed the crowd and played an instrumental version of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Mr. Critelli spent 151 days in combat and earned several medals of honor, including one for flying fourteen missions behind enemy lines to deliver supplies to American troops.

It was a day our students will not soon forget, a significant anniversary in U.S. history that they were fortunate to be a part of.
