In honor of Constitution Day, members of Bethpage High School's Civics Club traveled to JFK Middle School to teach younger students about the U.S. Constitution and the federal government's structure.
The visit opened with a group sing-along of "We the People" from "Schoolhouse Rock!" that set a lively tone, before the high schoolers guided their peers through a lesson featuring videos, slideshows and worksheets. Middle schoolers examined the roles and powers of the legislative, executive and judicial branches, gaining a clearer picture of the document that laid the foundation for American government.
For JFK students, the visit offered an early look at what awaits them in high school, including the Civics Club and the types of activities they could join down the road.
Social studies teacher Rob Fisher advises the club, which is active year-round with service and civic projects, from food and blood drives to its annual participation in Wreaths Across America at Calverton National Cemetery.
Events like the Constitution Day lesson align directly with the club's broader goal: building students' leadership abilities, strengthening their ties to the community, and deepening their understanding of what it means to be an engaged citizen.
