Central Boulevard Elementary School is kicking off the 12th year of its Buddies program, which brings together fifth graders and students in special education classes to build friendships throughout the school year. Teachers recommend participating fifth graders, who dedicate their Friday lunch periods to spending time with their buddies through play and shared activities.

To prepare for meeting their buddies, the fifth graders have been attending training sessions led by Assistant Principal Michelle Tavormina and district psychologist Dr. Lou Ricci. The sessions focus on understanding individual differences, building communication skills and learning how to create welcoming, supportive friendships.

Students have discussed how their buddies may have different sensory preferences, communication styles or ways of playing. They have also learned about tools such as communication devices and fidgets, and how these can help students express themselves and stay focused.

Dr. Ricci encouraged the fifth graders to follow their buddies' lead during their first few meetings, taking time to observe how they play, discover their interests and learn what makes them comfortable. He also introduced the concept of "labeling," or naming objects and activities during play to encourage communication and learning.

During a recent session, students participated in an activity in which they tossed a ball of yarn to one another, offering a compliment each time they passed it. The exercise reinforced the importance of making eye contact, recognizing others' strengths and helping everyone feel valued.

The session concluded with students creating handmade cards to welcome their new buddies ahead of their first meeting.

The Buddies program has become a cherished Central Boulevard tradition, culminating in a special field day celebration each spring. With their training nearly complete, this year's fifth graders are eager to meet their partners and begin building friendships that will grow throughout the school year.
