Fifth graders at Kramer Lane Elementary School tested their navigation skills during a hands-on compass workshop led by BOCES Outdoor and Environmental Education programs.

Students headed to the school's back field for an outdoor lesson in navigation and orienteering. Working in small groups, they learned to read and use a compass to determine direction, as well as estimate distances by pacing.

After practicing their new skills, students took on two challenges: a flag course and a treasure hunt. Both activities gave them a chance to apply what they learned as they navigated the field, followed directions, and worked together to reach their destinations.

The workshop combined outdoor exploration with practical lessons in geography, measurement and problem-solving, making for a fun and engaging learning experience.
