The midterm elections weren't the only races drawing attention this week. At Charles Campagne School, fourth and fifth graders got a firsthand lesson in democracy as they headed to the polls to elect their student government officers.
On Wednesday afternoon, eight students took center stage to deliver campaign speeches, hoping to earn the votes of their classmates. Guided by student government adviser Mrs. Sodono, the candidates shared their ideas, enthusiasm and reasons why they would make strong student leaders.
Before voting began, Mrs. Sodono reminded students that standing before their peers takes courage and that every candidate deserved recognition for stepping forward. She also emphasized the importance of respecting different opinions, supporting one another and accepting the election results with good sportsmanship.
Following the speeches, fourth and fifth graders headed straight to the polls. Voting booths set up throughout the hallways gave students the opportunity to cast their ballots, with classmates patiently waiting their turns. Each student received an "I Voted" sticker, just like voters participating in elections across the country.
The excitement continued Thursday afternoon when the results were announced. Congratulations to the newly elected student government officers:
President: Casey Simeone
Vice President: Nico Simpson
Secretary: Isabella Washington
Spirit Officer: Rayna Kalra
While four students earned officer positions, all eight candidates will have the opportunity to participate in student government throughout the school year.
Beyond choosing their representatives, the elections offered students a valuable lesson in civic engagement, leadership and the democratic process. From campaigning and public speaking to casting their ballots and respecting the outcome, CCS students experienced firsthand what it means to have a voice in their school community.
